More world records & gold medals for Kazakhstan

September 22, 2010

Maiya Maneza of Kazhakhstan did well at the World Weightlifting Championships in Antalya, on September 20, 2010. Their coach must be doing something right. It’s a shame there seem to be no video interviews with him or most of their athletes on YouTube or Vimeo.

Snatch: 105kg
Clean & Jerk: 143kg (2010 world record for the women’s 63kg category)
Total: 248kg

Defending world champion Svetlana Podobedova of Kazakhstan breaks her own world record clean and jerk with a 161 and takes first place overall.

Snatch: 134kg
Clean & Jerk: 161 (2010 world record for the women’s 75kg category)
Total: 295

“Вес взят” ["Weight conquered"] – Soviet Olympic Weightlifting documentary

April 2, 2010

Documentary from the archives of GosTeleRadioFond (semi acronym for State Television & Radio Fund).
Date Produced: USSR, 1976
Director: P. Paters [or is it Peters? Patars?].

The beginning mentions Paul Anderson & his visit to the USSR for competition/exhibition in Olympic Weightlifting. It proceeds to talk about how after Anderson’s visit, which was super popular with local fans, Soviet trainers started looking across the country for someone who can match or beat Anderson. They found Yuri Vlasov. It proceeds to interview Vlasov (the guy with the beard in the video still above). He talks about how he was in college around the time when he started seriously lifting. He studied during the days and trained in the evenings.

At one point, Vlasov says that leg strength is the most important for success in weightlifting. He says, that’s the conclusion he came to by observing Paul Anderson.

Next, they discuss Leonid Zhabotinsky. In part 2, they discuss Vasiliy Alexeev.

Potentially the funnest coach ever

Kazakh coach at the World Weightlifting championship Korea 2009:

About 2/3 of the way into the video they show him doing the dance of joy by jumping on one of his lifters Maiya Maneza, the gold medal winner.

Damn, tendons snap so loudly!

October 4, 2009

This clip is from a 2009 local Moscow youth weightlifting competition. The video is choppy in parts.

At around 00:06:50 (6 min and 50 seconds), a competitor’s knee tendon snaps (you can hear it!) in the middle of a Clean & Jerk, as he tries to dip for the Jerk:
